Even Dogs deserve Big Game Snacks!

The words "hawks," "pats", and "deflate-gate" are ingrained in our brains this week - and especially today, the American "holiday of all holidays" Super Bowl Sunday.  While my husband and I anticipate that any attempt at healthy eating is suspended for the next 24 hours, we are mindful that our host's dog might appreciate something more than buffalo chicken wings fallen to the ground, or Doritos laden with queso. So this morning (thank you Ina Garten) I set about to make Fred some snacks of his own - loaded with goodness and flavor. Here's the recipe - super easy and my 2 dogs, the taste-testers, fully approve!

Ina Garten's Peanut Butter Whole Wheat Dog Treats (makes 10-12)

1.5 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup all purpose flour

1/2 cup powdered milk

1/2 cup quick cooking oats

1/2 cup smooth peanut butter

2 TB toasted wheat germ

1 extra large egg

1 cup water

To Make:

Preheat oven to 325. Mix all dry ingredients in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle. Add the egg and water, and mix until blended. Empty the mixing bowl on to a well-floured surface, knead the dough into a ball and roll out to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into bone shapes (or footballs, or cats, or whatever!) and place onto baking sheet lined with either parchment or a silpat.  Bake for 1 hour, cool, and the dogs in your life will love you forever.  Here's to you Fred!
